FAQ
Q1. What does my child receive when attending the program?
The program provides a practical way for children to learn about bike safety initiatives through bike handling skills, safe places to ride, how to fit and wear a helmet, relevant knowledge of road rules, visibility while riding and an introduction to bike maintenance.
Q2. Where are the programs being run?
40 Programs will be run across NSW between April and June. A list of initial locations, venues and dates are listed above.
Q3. When do registrations close?
Registrations close 48 hours before each program or when program registrations are full.
Q4. What does the program teach in more detail?
- Progressively develop and reinforce skills used to ride a bike, and how to apply these skills safely as well as using road rules relevant to the age of the participants
- Assist children to correctly fit and wear a helmet and outline the dangers of not wearing a helmet
- Introduce children to bike maintenance. I.e keeping a bike roadworthy, changing a tyre and riding in a comfortable position
- Increase awareness of safe places to ride within communities and behaviours towards riding safely
Q5. How long does the program last?
Each program lasts for 3 hours and includes a bike check and service to ensure bikes are roadworthy.
Q6. How many children will be at each program?
There is a maximum of 30 places per program available.
Q7. Who delivers the program.
All instructors are trained, have experience in teaching and are nationally accredited under the Australian Sports Commissions National Coaching and Accreditation Framework (NCAS). All instructors complete Working With Children Checks relevant to their state and hold current first aid certificates.
Q8. Do I need my own bike?
Where possible it is important to encourage children to learn to ride on the bike they regularly use. This ensures children practice skills and become familiar with how their bike responds and reacts, this can be different because of a bike's weight, size of frame and wheel size.
Each program will have a small allocation of bikes to support children that may not own a bike. When registering please indicate if you will not have access to a bike for the program.
Q9. What should my child wear?
If the program is delivered within your school, please refer to your school's requirements. For community based programs, children should wear closed toe shoes, comfortable clothing and their helmet.
Q10. What happens if it rains on the day?
Programs will go ahead in all weather, however activities will vary with undercover facilities available.
